Although our bone paste is thoroughly ground during the paste-making process, the bone paste may sometimes contain tiny fragments, usually under 1 cm. These small pieces are safe for pets to swallow. Your pet's food pipe i.e. the oesophagus, has a diameter of 2-3 cm and can easily accommodate <1cm bone crumbs when swallowed. Once bones enter the stomach, gastric juices and bile readily break down the bone fragments - that's why you rarely see undigested bone in your pet’s faeces (in fact, vegetables are even harder for pets to digest than bones!). If your pet has difficulty with denser bone pastes like kangaroo or pork bone paste, consider switching to softer options such as poultry bone pastes for easier digestion. Also refer to our other FAQ on Bones & Safety for more information!
