Some pets tend to eat too fast especially if they've been fed ground meats or kibble their entire lives. They have never felt the need to chew their food and that gives rise to gulping. One of the reasons we keep our meats chunky is to encourage chewing, rather than 'inhaling' food. Plus eating chunks is more satisfying for them than eating ground-up mush all the time!
